They often don't pay well, the markets are drying up, and short stories aren't read as widely as longer work. As an attendee of last year's conference asked me, "Why write short stories, at all?" In this panel, short story writers would discuss why they continue to write short fiction, what they enjoy about the format, and what they think will be the future of short story publishing will hold.
